Fat Tuesday Festival – 4 to 8th March 2011

By Sarah Janes (Feb 2011)

It has been a long winter, but fortunately some cheer is on the horizon. Roll on Shrove Tuesday – 8th March! In New Orleans and Rio they call it Mardi Gras, in Venice it is known as Carnivale but Hastings now has its very own “Fat Tuesday” (English for Mardi Gras).

Following last year’s inaugural event, Fat Tuesday is back, but this time with a full weekend of events and happenings leading up to the big day itself. More performers, more venues, more variety, more mayhem! Our Hastings Fat Tuesday borrows heavily from the New Orleans take on the festivities, combining the enjoyment of good music, a flair for dressing up and partying. So dress up, turn out and see Hastings at its best, put some money in the pot to support our nominated charity – St Michaels Hospice – but above all enjoy yourself.

Spring is just around the corner. 25 Bands at 12 venues from the Old Town to St Leonards put on one hell of a night of live music. Each pub has 6 bands playing from 8PM untill 11PM plus a bunch of fringe acts. Pubs, punters and performers are encouraged to dress up in Mardi Gras fashion. Venues involved include; The Filo, The Jenny Lind, Porters, The Dragon Bar, The Black Market, The Dolphin, Pissaros, The Carlisle and The Rooms (St. Lens). Also a bunch of fringe venues still being signed up but including Revolver Bar and The Anchor where you will be able to catch anything from bagpipes to gypsy jazz.
